Best places to stay in hawaii

Even before you set foot on The Big Island of Hawaii for your elopement, you’ll want to be prepared and know where you should stay! Each city and town in Hawaii is unique, and offers various different experiences and vibes. Let’s take a tour to figure out where you’ll be staying during your Hawaii elopement adventure.

You’ll probably book your flight to land in one of these spots! Hilo’s airport code is ITO, and Kona’s is KOA. There is a Costco in Kona near the airport, so it may be a good idea to invest in a Costco membership to fill up your rental car because it ends up being a lot cheaper to get gas here (usually at least .50-$1per gallon cheaper).

The two main cities on The Big Island are Hilo and Kona.

Hilo is on the east side of the island, and gets more rain than the west side. A sunny day on the east side of Hawaii is magical because of how lush the jungles are! Hilo offers diverse and authentic food, and has those essential island vibes you might be after. Hilo is less developed than Kona but has more character and authenticity in many ways. Kona has more franchises and is more catered towards visitors.

If you’re looking for more sunshine and beach vibes, you’ll want to stay in Kona or Waikoloa. It makes it easier to plan your wedding if you have vendors, as many wedding and elopement vendors are located in Kona. Many activities using Kona as their jumping-off point. Sunset catamarans, snorkeling, and Manta Ray trips come to mind! Kona also offers nightlife, more than almost anywhere else on The Big Island…but we are still a sleepy island…most bars and restaurants close by 9 or 10pm.

PLACES TO STAY IN KONA, HAWAII:

If you want to be in Kona but slightly out of town, you can try Captain Cook or Holualoa. These two areas have more of a lush tropical feel, because they are at a higher elevation. And both of these small towns have classic Hawaiian architecture..small colorful shacks now converted into stores and restaurants. These two areas aren’t too far outside of Kona, and are really good for Airbnbs!

PLACES TO STAY IN HOLUALOA, HAWAII:

Cozy Studio

Aolani House (One of the top rated accommodations on the big island, the main house is amazing if you have friends or family joining you! And the coffee cottage is cute for just the two of you!)

PLACES TO STAY IN CAPTAIN COOK (KA'AWALOA):

Seeking a resort experience and nice hotels on the beach? Waikoloa! In this town, you’ll be in a good position to explore the northern part of the island such as Pololu Valley or make your way over Saddle Road to explore Hilo. Waikoloa is full of boutiques, well known brands, and nice restaurants. Such a relaxing vacation base! This area is the center of resorts so it is filled with lots of visitors and doesn’t have a “local” feel.

Nāʻālehu has a mix of jungle but is a little drier and warmer than staying in Volcano. However, you are only about 30 minutes to the entrance of the national park. A totally cute tiny town! It’s a great base town if you want to explore Papakolea (Green Sands Beach) and Southpoint (the southernmost point of the US). If you’re planning on staying in any of these towns, stock up on supplies in Kona or Hilo before exploring! There aren’t a lot of nice airbnb’s here..but there are unique glamping and cute treehouse opportunities!

PLACES TO STAY IN Nāʻālehu:

Studio with Hot Tub in Naalehu, HI

Luxury Dome with Outdoor Bathtub in Na'alehu, HI

Temple Cottage in Na'alehu, HI

Sea Mountain Resort (Naalehu/Pahala, HI) (this is an older resort I kind of love. There is a pool, the rooms are all well-maintained and you can see views of the ocean from all of them. It has never been crowded when I stay here. And I like it better than staying in Volcano because I don’t like the cold, haha. This is right near Punaluu black sand beach so perfect place to stay before or after your elopement if you want to get married there. It’s also about 34 minutes to Volcano National Park.

Staying here works perfectly if you want to elope at volcanoes national park. Make sure to bring warm layers and rain jackets as the temperature can get very cool here at night… the fun part about this is a lot of the accommodations have hot tubs and outdoor spas!

There’s a winery near Volcano, which can be so much fun for after-wedding drinks!

Volcano’s Thai restaurant is a great dinner choice.

PLACES TO STAY IN VOLCANO:

Amazing Treehouse with Swing in Volcano, HI

Glass House in Volcano, HI

You’ll find the town of Pahoa nearby, filled with crystal shops, cafes, worldly clothing, and a really cute bookstore. It’s a cool area to explore if you want to see where the new lava flow happened recently, too! I wouldn’t make this the base for your trip however.

Service in this area is not very good so make sure you find accommodation that has wifi! This area is filled with some of the quirkiest airbnbs and sometimes larger coastal homes for more affordable pricing. Just keep in mind the weather is hit or miss here so sunshine in photos may not be the reality of the weather when you are here. And there are not a lot of safe places to get into the water in this area. For beaches you may need to head up to Hilo! If the weather isn’t great, however, there are cool geothermal ponds to explore nearby!

PLACES TO STAY IN PAHOA:

Bali Style House near the Ocean

Unique Concrete House featured on HGTV Pahoa, HI

Large Villa for Large Group in Pahoa, HI

Oceanfront Home in Pahoa, HI

Towns Worth Checking Out During Your Hawaiian Vacation:

  • There aren’t many big box stores, as many restaurants or many opportunities to get groceries. You will want to stock up in either Kona or Hilo.

  • You should be prepared for a travel fee and early morning wake up fee from vendors (hair and makeup and officiant) if you're doing a sunrise elopement at Volcano National Park or anywhere in this area. If you are doing your own hair and makeup, you can stay near the park so that you don't have to be up as early. If you are including vendors, and don’t want to pay travel fees, you may want to stay in Hilo or Kona to have access to your vendors, then stay at smaller towns the day of your elopement and during your stay in Hawaii.

  • You’ll find cute hidden gem restaurants, but for more variety, consider larger towns!

Here’s What You Should Know if You Stay in a Smaller Town:

  • If you’re not sure which side of the island to stay on yet, I recommend booking two different spots on VRBO or AIRBNB that have a lenient cancellation policy. Some hosts only allow you to cancel within 48 hours of booking…while others let you cancel with a full refund 2 weeks to a month before your booking date.
  • The earlier you book, the more options you have as reservations can fill up quickly.
  • Most of the beaches in Kona are accessible through resorts and hotels. For better beaches, you will want to head 30 minutes to an hour north of Kona closer to Waikoloa.

Things to Remember When Booking Your Stay in Hawaii:

And on that note...

No matter where you decide to stay in Hawaii during your elopement trip, I just know you’ll pick the perfect place based on what is important to you and your partner.
